How to measure for replacement outdoor cushions
A replacement cushion goes wrong in one place: you measure the worn-out old cushion instead of the frame. Here's the right way, in three numbers.
The three numbers
- Width — side to side, along the front edge of the seat frame.
- Depth — front to back, from the front edge to where the backrest begins.
- Thickness — how tall you want the foam (5 cm trim, 8 cm the comfortable default, 10 cm plush).
Measure the frame, not the cushion
Old foam compresses and shrinks — measuring it copies its sag. Measure the frame the cushion sits in. If the seat is slatted and slightly bowed, measure at the widest usable point; we build a boxed edge that holds its shape.
The overhang trap
People pad the numbers "to be safe" and end up with a cushion that overhangs and slides. Give us the true frame size — we add the right seam allowance so it sits flush, not proud.
FAQ
Do I add anything for the seams?
No — give us the true frame measurement. We add the correct seam and boxing allowance so the finished cushion sits flush in the frame.
What thickness should I choose?
8 cm is the comfortable default. Go 5 cm if the chair arms are low, 10 cm for a plush lounge feel — but check a thicker cushion won't lift you above the armrests.
